About this paper

Dianmu Zhang, Blake Hannaford

IKBT addresses symbolic inverse kinematics for serial, non-redundant robot arms with up to six degrees of freedom. It combines equation transformations, expert-written solvers, a Behavior Tree that selects and ranks solution methods, and a graph tracking dependencies among alternatives. It solved 18 of 19 tested robot models, including four- and five-DOF examples, but one six-DOF example failed.

Key insights

  • Behavior Trees provide an effective and interpretable architecture for organizing complex symbolic mathematical reasoning, extending their utility beyond traditional control or game AI.
  • Mimicking human expert strategies with a modular set of rule-based solvers allows for a generalized symbolic inverse kinematics approach applicable to various robot configurations, including those without simplifying geometric conditions.
  • A solution graph, rather than a tree, is essential for accurately capturing complex inter-variable dependencies and grouping all possible joint configurations, especially when variables depend on multiple independent parents.
