The authors review a design for photonic spiking networks, combining excitable laser neurons and broadcast-and-weight optical connections. Experiments on a graphene fiber-laser prototype show thresholding, refractory suppression, and repeatable pulses; microring weight banks demonstrate a component. A table estimates 20 GHz MAC rate and 0.26 pJ/MAC, versus HICANN’s 22.4 MHz and 198.4 pJ/MAC; these are estimates, not measured performance of an integrated spiking processor.
