About this paper

An algorithm named Optimistic Proximal Policy Optimization (OPPO) is presented, providing the first provably sample-efficient policy optimization method that actively integrates exploration. It achieves a near-optimal regret bound of O(sqrt(d^2 H^3 T)) in linear Markov Decision Processes with unknown transitions and adversarial rewards.
Key insights
- The principle of "optimism in the face of uncertainty" can be effectively integrated into policy optimization frameworks to guide provably efficient exploration.
- KL-regularization in policy updates provides robustness against adversarial reward functions, making policy updates "conservatively greedy" and preventing catastrophic performance drops.
- Combining optimistic Q-function estimation with conservative policy updates enables statistically efficient exploration while maintaining stability in linear MDPs.
