About this paper
Yuxuan Liu, Yuan Yixuan, Ming Liu
This work enhances monocular 3D object detection by explicitly incorporating ground plane geometric constraints into a deep learning framework. The proposed Ground-Aware Convolution module and an anchor filtering strategy enable improved depth estimation and 3D bounding box prediction, achieving state-of-the-art results on the KITTI benchmark at 20 FPS.
Key insights
- Most objects in autonomous driving environments rest on a relatively flat ground plane, providing a strong geometric constraint (known camera elevation, object base on ground) that can be leveraged for depth estimation.
- Dynamically sampling features relative to an estimated ground contact point can mimic human visual cues for depth perception and improve monocular 3D inference.
- Filtering 3D anchors that are geometrically implausible (e.g., too far from the expected ground plane) significantly reduces the learning burden and improves classification accuracy for 3D object detection.
