Researchers from Technical University of Munich and University of Bonn developed a unified framework for simultaneously performing semantic and instance segmentation of 3D LiDAR data over time, moving beyond traditional tracking-by-detection paradigms. The framework, called 4D Panoptic LiDAR Segmentation, achieved an LSTQ score of 56.89 on the SemanticKITTI test set, significantly outperforming tracking-by-detection baselines.
Key insights
- Jointly processing multiple LiDAR scans within 4D volumes significantly enhances temporal instance association and semantic segmentation quality compared to single-scan or tracking-by-detection methods.
- Combining learned feature embeddings with explicit 4D spatio-temporal coordinates during density-based clustering is crucial for robust and consistent instance association.
- A point-centric evaluation metric that decouples semantic classification errors from instance association errors provides a more accurate and intuitive assessment of complex spatio-temporal perception tasks.
