About this paper

Chris Yu, Caleb Brakensiek, Henrik Schumacher, Keenan Crane

Repulsive Surfaces turns collision avoidance into a global optimization objective. Its tangent-point energy penalizes surface points close in space but far apart along the surface. The authors discretize the energy for triangle meshes and make fractional-order gradients practical with preconditioning and hierarchy. Their method makes better progress than tested alternatives on meshes, but discrete motion is not formally guaranteed collision-free.
