About this paper
Manu Joseph, Harsh Raj
GANDALF, a deep learning architecture from Walmart Global Tech and Delhi Technological University, introduces a novel approach for tabular data that matches or exceeds Gradient Boosted Decision Trees in predictive performance. The model, which features Gated Feature Learning Units, also provides inherent interpretability and computational efficiency. It achieves state-of-the-art results on several benchmarks, outperforming other deep learning models and performing on par with GBDTs.
Key insights
- Gating mechanisms from recurrent networks can be effectively adapted to non-temporal tabular data for learning complex hierarchical feature representations.
- In-built, learnable feature selection using `t-softmax` within each processing unit significantly enhances model performance and provides inherent interpretability.
- Decoupling the candidate feature representation from the masked input during gating prevents sparsity-induced gradient flow issues and improves learning stability.
