About this paper
James C.R. Whittington, Will Dorrell, Surya Ganguli, Timothy E.J. Behrens
The paper proposes that nonnegative activity and energy efficiency can produce factor-selective neurons without prescribing factors. Linear theory shows that under stated assumptions, minimum-energy representations assign each neuron at most one independent factor. Simulations show that removing any constraint yields entangled units. In its spatial model, fields shift toward consistently located objects, a model result rather than a rodent finding.
