About this paper
Matilde Marcolli, Noam Chomsky, Robert Berwick
The authors model Merge using a Hopf algebra: syntactic objects are unordered binary trees, and workspaces are forests. A coproduct tracks accessible subtrees and the quotients left after extraction, formalizing external and internal Merge. In this model, external Merge increases workspace size by one, while internal Merge leaves it unchanged; these results depend on binary-tree and quotient rules.
