About this paper
Ruikai Cui, Siyuan He, Shi Qiu
The Segment Salient Object Model (SSOM) adapts the Segment Anything Model (SAM) for salient object detection (SOD) using Adaptive Low Rank Adaptation (AdaLoRA) and a learnable saliency prompt. SSOM achieves superior or competitive performance against state-of-the-art methods on five benchmark datasets while significantly reducing trainable parameters from 93 million to approximately 4 million.
Key insights
- Foundation models like SAM can be effectively adapted for specialized, nuanced tasks such as salient object detection by leveraging their vast pre-trained visual knowledge.
- Adaptive Low Rank Adaptation (AdaLoRA) provides an efficient and effective method for fine-tuning massive models by dynamically allocating rank importance, significantly reducing computational demands without sacrificing performance.
- A simple learnable embedding can serve as an effective "saliency prompt" to guide a general segmentation model towards identifying and segmenting the most visually prominent object.
