About this paper

Selim Sandal, Ismail Akturk

Large Language Models augmented with an attention sink mechanism achieve near-perfect zero-shot Register-Transfer Level (RTL) code generation for complex hardware designs from a single high-level prompt. For a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) design, the attention sink approach generated 4293 out of 4312 correct tokens (99.56% success rate), significantly outperforming traditional dense and window attention mechanisms.

Key insights

  • The attention sink mechanism effectively mitigates the context window limitation of LLMs, preventing common errors such as redundant variable copies, hallucinated code, and corrupt output when generating long, complex RTL designs.
  • Zero-shot prompting with an attention sink-augmented LLM is feasible for complex hardware designs, bypassing the need for extensive domain-specific fine-tuning on scarce RTL datasets.
  • Instruction-tuned LLMs, when properly prompted and augmented, can interpret high-level natural language specifications and translate them into functionally correct, industry-standard compliant RTL code.
