About this paper

Qianjiang Hu, Zhimin Zhang, Wei Hu

RangeLDM is a new method that generates high-quality, realistic LiDAR point clouds at significantly faster speeds than previous approaches. It achieves an order of magnitude improvement in quantitative metrics and is 200 times faster than prior state-of-the-art methods, producing synthetic data highly similar to real-world scans for autonomous driving applications.

Key insights

  • Accurate transformation from 3D point clouds to 2D range-view images, specifically addressing sensor-specific projection nuances via Hough Voting, is fundamental for high-quality LiDAR generation.
  • A range-guided discriminator, employing meta-kernel convolutions, significantly enhances the VAE's ability to reconstruct fine 3D geometric details and mitigate blurriness in generated range images.
  • Training diffusion models in a low-dimensional latent space derived from a VAE drastically improves generation speed (200x faster) while maintaining or improving the realism of generated LiDAR data.
  • Combining circular convolutions with explicit directional conditioning is essential to leverage the periodic nature of range images without introducing rotational ambiguity in the generated 3D scenes.
