About this paper

Ye Mao, Junpeng Jing, Krystian Mikolajczyk

OpenDlign enhances open-world 3D point cloud understanding by generating visually diverse, depth-aligned images via a diffusion model and efficiently transferring knowledge from pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLMs). It achieved an 8.0% Top1 accuracy improvement on ModelNet40 and 16.4% on OmniObject3D for zero-shot 3D classification, alongside substantial gains in few-shot tasks and 3D object detection.

Key insights

  • Generating visually diverse and realistic depth-aligned images via diffusion models substantially improves the robustness of multimodal alignment for 3D representations compared to synthetic CAD renderings.
  • Efficiently fine-tuning a small, residually connected part of a pre-trained Vision-Language Model (VLM) image encoder effectively leverages its vast 2D knowledge for 3D tasks with minimal parameters.
  • Combining a contour-aware depth map projection with specialized depth-specific text prompts is crucial for optimizing VLM interpretation of 3D geometry and mitigating catastrophic forgetting during zero-shot transfer.
