About this paper
Shijun Long, Ying Li, Chenming Wu, Bin Xu, Wei Fan
HPHS, a hierarchical planning framework from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Baidu Research, enables fast and complete autonomous exploration of unknown environments by integrating hybrid frontier sampling and a global subregion arrangement strategy. The system reduced travel path by 7.0% to 29.1% and exploration time by 4.1% to 27.2% compared to state-of-the-art methods in simulations, while achieving near-perfect exploration completion.
Key insights
- Integrating hybrid frontier sampling directly from sensor data and local maps reduces computational load and provides robust frontier acquisition, independent of global map scale.
- Employing a hierarchical planning approach that optimizes the global sequence of subregion exploration, rather than just local targets, significantly improves path efficiency and completeness by reducing backtracking.
- Utilizing a global revenue function that incorporates Dynamic Time Warping promotes smoother, more globally optimal exploration paths, mitigating myopic behavior.
