A backward simultaneous-decoding framework is developed for communication systems that must recover messages while estimating channel states from strictly causal, possibly noisy transmitter observations. The approach exactly characterizes the point-to-point capacity–distortion trade-off and yields improved achievable regions for degraded broadcast and multiple-access channels, including ISAC interpretations.

Key insights

  • For the point-to-point channel, simultaneous decoding achieves the exact capacity–distortion function, with the state-compression penalty appearing as I(V;S_T|X,Y).
  • In degraded broadcast channels, a state description decoded for the weaker receiver can also help the stronger receiver decode its private codeword, explaining why simultaneous decoding strictly contains the sequential region in some cases.
  • State descriptions are not merely sensing overhead: in multiple-access and binary examples, decoded descriptions can improve message rates, support encoder cooperation, and even enable zero-distortion state reconstruction.
