TripoSG generates detailed 3D meshes from a single image by conditioning a flow transformer on image features and latent representations learned from curated 3D shapes. Its geometry-focused VAE uses signed distance fields and surface-normal guidance. In a 975M-parameter ablation, Rectified Flow scores Normal-FID 9.47 versus EDM at 9.50. The largest combined configuration reports 3.36; unseen geometry remains inferred, not verified.
Key insights
- Meticulous data curation and quality filtering are crucial; initial data quality outweighs raw quantity, with further performance gains achieved by scaling the high-quality dataset.
- Rectified Flow models, when combined with transformer architectures and U-Net-like skip-connections, can effectively adapt 2D/video generative AI successes to high-fidelity 3D synthesis.
- Adopting SDF representation with geometry-aware supervision (normal and Eikonal losses) in the VAE is essential for encoding fine geometric details and preventing aliasing artifacts in 3D latent spaces.
