A pseudo-global fusion paradigm and a Manifold Adaptation and Pairwise Variance-Locality Learning Metric (MAPVLM) are presented for LiDAR-based Place Recognition (LPR). The approach effectively addresses limitations in feature representation and distance metrics, achieving leading performance on KITTI and Ford Campus datasets with a KITTI AUC of 91.9 and F1max of 89.1, and demonstrating strong cross-environment generalization capabilities while operating in real-time.
Key insights
- Early integration of multi-view information through a pseudo-global fusion paradigm mitigates the "information island" problem, leading to more comprehensive and discriminative feature representations.
- Replacing Euclidean distance with an adaptive Mahalanobis metric, formulated via an SPD matrix (MAPVLM), allows the model to better account for the intrinsic geometric structures and nonlinear distributions of LiDAR data.
- Contextual alignment between individual view features and a unified global context through cross-attention effectively enriches local features and ensures semantic consistency.
