About this paper

Qiying Hu, Linping Zhang, Xueqian Wang, Gang Li, Yu Liu, Xiao-Ping Zhang

Researchers at Tsinghua University integrated pre-trained Large Language Models with a novel patch selection mechanism for marine radar target detection. The developed system achieved an average detection rate of 72.06% across nine IPIX datasets, surpassing state-of-the-art deep learning methods by up to 18.19% while maintaining competitive inference speeds.

Key insights

  • Pre-trained Large Language Models, despite their textual origins, demonstrate exceptional cross-modal transfer capabilities and general pattern recognition useful for radar signal analysis.
  • Identifying and retaining only the most significant temporal patches within radar signal features, while discarding less important ones, leads to substantial improvements in detection performance.
  • A partial fine-tuning strategy, specifically fine-tuning only the layer normalization layers of a pre-trained LLM, is more effective than full fine-tuning, preserving learned knowledge and reducing computational overhead.
