About this paper
Yuchen Liang, Yingbin Liang, Lifeng Lai, Ness Shroff
Researchers at The Ohio State University and UC Davis developed a new analytical framework for discrete diffusion models, providing improved convergence guarantees for -leaping with linear dependence on vocabulary size and establishing the first theoretical guarantees for the efficient Euler and Tweedie -leaping samplers. These efficient samplers achieve ˜O(d²S/ε) iteration steps for ε-KL accuracy.
Key insights
- KL-divergence for continuous-time Markov chains can be robustly decomposed and bounded using differential inequalities, avoiding strong path-wise regularity conditions.
- Achieving a linear dependence on vocabulary size (S) requires directly bounding the expected difference of reverse rate matrices, instead of relying on uniform bounds of likelihood ratio derivatives.
- Theoretical guarantees for discrete-grid samplers (e.g., Euler, Tweedie -leaping) can be established by demonstrating their asymptotic equivalence to an analyzable approximate sampler.
