About this paper
Zhengtong Zhu, Jiaqing Fan, Zhixuan Liu, Fanzhang Li
A training-free framework for reasoning video object segmentation (ReasonVOS), termed SDAM, integrates pre-trained multimodal large language models, image segmentation models, and object trackers to achieve state-of-the-art performance on multiple benchmarks by decoupling spatio-temporal reasoning and employing an adaptive object memory. It significantly surpasses previous methods that require extensive fine-tuning across several RefVOS and ReasonVOS datasets, including a 5.2% J&F improvement on ReasonVOS.
Key insights
- Decoupling spatio-temporal processing into distinct spatial localization and temporal propagation phases enhances temporal stability and segmentation consistency across dynamic video sequences.
- Leveraging adaptive keyframe selection based on motion cues, rather than fixed intervals, significantly improves the capture of critical video events relevant to complex textual queries.
- Integrating powerful, pre-trained foundational models in a training-free manner can achieve competitive or superior performance on complex video understanding tasks, bypassing the need for extensive task-specific fine-tuning.
