About this paper

Haiyi Zhu, Canwen Wang, Qing Xiao, Hong Shen

The authors propose 14 principles for designing human–agent relationships across onboarding, interaction, ongoing use, and failure, drawing on HCI literature. They assess nine deployed agents with a heuristic checklist, finding that long-term principles were most often violated; preventing unhealthy dependency averaged −1.22. The ratings identify design concerns, but do not show that applying the principles improves user outcomes.
