About this paper

Feng Wang, Canmiao Fu, Zhipeng Huang, Chen Li, Jing Lyu, Ge Li

Peking University and WeChat Vision researchers introduced the Cognitive-structured Multimodal Agent (CMA), an agentic framework that addresses limitations of unified multimodal models in long-horizon dialogues through explicit memory management and modular design. The CMA achieved 91.4% (English) and 89.6% (Chinese) retrieval accuracy on the M2CA-Bench benchmark and nearly halved per-turn inference time while improving generation quality compared to larger unified baselines.

Key insights

  • Structured memory management and modular decision-making are crucial for scaling multimodal agents to long-horizon interactions, outperforming monolithic models relying solely on parameter scaling.
  • Optimizing visual abstraction for its utility in downstream retrieval, rather than generic captioning metrics, significantly improves memory representation effectiveness.
  • Accurate cross-turn visual context retrieval is a primary bottleneck for achieving high-quality multimodal generation in extended dialogue scenarios.
