About this paper
Jialuo Li, Pengfei Xu
LayoutShop helps designers create magazine-style article pages by adapting user-selected templates to an article’s headlines, text, and illustrations. It combines template structures, fits element positions to content and layout rules, and presents alternatives. In a study using eight articles, participants created layouts faster, and sampled layouts received higher quality ratings than editor-made layouts; the findings are limited to this study.
Key insights
- A hybrid approach combining user-driven template conceptualization with optimization-based geometry fitting effectively bridges creative intent with strict content constraints and typographical principles.
- Formulating layout geometry as an MIQCQP efficiently enforces complex design rules and content-specific requirements, such as text area estimation and illustration aspect ratio preservation, leading to feasible and high-quality designs.
- Data-driven neural network assessment can reliably filter generated layouts, aligning computational outputs with human judgments of visual appeal and structural rationality.
