The authors develop a framework to separate social and geographical segregation and infer subgroup connections from U.S. Facebook friendship totals. A joint geography-and-social model predicts regional volumes better than distance-based and hybrid alternatives across 40 state-level analyses. For race, education, and income, social segregation is two to three times traditional geographical segregation; this result concerns inferred Facebook ties, not relationships generally.
