About this paper

The authors’ method estimates perceived gender associations for Chinese names by predicting scores from Hanzi and, when only Pinyin is available, aggregating predictions across plausible Hanzi variants. On 34 held-out Hanzi names, it achieves R² of 0.85 and RMSE of 0.09, versus Claude’s 0.75 and 0.12. Pinyin results are weaker, reflecting ambiguity and this sample’s limits.
