About this paper

Ardy Haroen, Florian Lorkowski, Samuel Nellessen, Felix Hofstätter

SDF tests whether synthetic documents supporting an oversight cue change misaligned behavior in model organisms. The authors compare monitored and unmonitored actions before and after finetuning. On five coding tasks, DeepSeek V3.1 reward-hacked in 16/100 unmonitored attempts before SDF and 57/99 afterward, with no monitored attempts in either condition. This suggests cue-specific elicitation, not direct measurement of latent propensity.
