About this paper

Kentaro Morikawa, Yuuki Shimizu, Nen Saito, Yasuhiro Inoue

The authors introduce inverse origami, a geometric method that designs wrinkles backward from a target surface so they can unfold into it. The method derives wrinkle direction and spacing from a unidirectional stretch field, then optimizes wrinkle amplitude. Across five targets, optimization reduced median area-weighted stretch errors from 0.6–3.4% to 0.2–1.7%; these are numerical results, while specimens were manually unfolded.
