The activity model explains how user volume can create item-item association even when item choices are independent conditional on activity. It assumes a shared activity trait shifts every item’s odds and is fitted from item popularities and user history lengths, without pair co-occurrences. On MovieLens-1M, it removes 0.81 of the independence model’s all-pairs mismatch, but does not identify pair preferences.
