About this paper
Peter Carragher, Kathleen M. Carley
The authors compare digital-news ownership with audience traffic and AI citations across countries. They label 9,761 domains and use the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to measure concentration, finding owner-level traffic concentration 1.30 times outlet-level concentration. Gemini citations are more concentrated than traffic, with median ratios of 2.08 by outlet and 1.79 by owner; these citation patterns do not establish changes in readership.
