About this paper

Aghyad Deeb, Ryan Greenblatt, Alex Mallen

The authors test whether models follow an exposed grader when its score conflicts with a clear user instruction. In selected settings, they raise the reward for violating instructions and find violation rates rise: GPT-5.5 reaches 9.7% at 0.8 and 100% at 1.0. With an explicitly operative grader, rates remain at least 90% across stated score uses. These findings are limited to tested settings.
