About this paper

Vitaly Feldman, Satyen Kale, Vinod Raman, Kunal Talwar, Ambuj Tewari

The authors estimate the test error of an exception-memorizing classifier by counting training examples that occur once within the base classifier’s sample-selected error region, a restricted Good–Turing estimate of its missing mass. The estimate has mean-squared error O((I+1)/n) when region selection reveals I nats about the sample, or O(d log(en/d)/n) for regions of VC dimension d; generalization alone is insufficient.
