The authors present a survey and framework for assistants that understand and respond while inputs and interaction states keep changing, rather than only after a finished prompt. They distinguish broad multimodal ability from using it in ongoing interaction, and describe streaming models and foreground–background coordination. The survey maps evidence but establishes neither a winning architecture nor that interactivity requires capability loss.
